Chapter 10

“Can we back up a bit, please?” Samantha asked softly.

Lily walked over to her. “What is it, Sam?”

“I still don’t get the whole unicorn food thing. Why did Stefan give Val unicorn food?”

Lily tried her best to explain. “You two are here to help Val’s horse, right?”

“Yes, so what does that have to do with unicorn food? Is that supposed to help him?”

“No. We were taking you to Nrocinu so you could catch one. Their magical power is not a myth. Odette must have felt that was the only way to help your horse. Normally Stefan would not have access to such a thing. She must have given it to him to give to you.”

“But what’s with the secret poem to figure out and having to find Stefan? Why didn’t she give it to us and have the mirror take us there?”

“She couldn’t. I’ve told you, we really shouldn’t interfere in your world. It may seem hard to understand, but things have to be done in a roundabout way if we’re to help you.”

“Almost like we have to prove ourselves worthy of the task,” Valerie said.

“Yes, something like that, I guess. You were supposed to figure a portion of this out for yourselves, but the trolls ruined that.” She picked up a piece of paper and spelled out Nrocinu and held it up for them. Then she recited:

“The magical place you seek,

Is home to the magical beast.

The gorgeous countryside with backward name,

Holds the magical horn and beautiful mane.”

The girls listened to the poem and studied the word Lily wrote.

“Oh, my goodness!” Valerie said suddenly. “Nrocinu is unicorn backward!”

Lily smiled. “That’s right.”

“That’s funny, Val,” said Samantha. “You probably would have gotten that faster if we saw it written down earlier.” She explained to the other two girls. “Val’s dad made a sign for their property. He put their last name backward to name their farm.”

Val laughed. “It’s funny how even our cousins don’t get it until we explain it.”

“You were supposed to solve the riddle before we moved on. I see you would have had no problems with it.” Lily smiled. “We’ll still have to get you there; we have to get out of here first, though.”

Rapunzel was quiet and listened to the girls talking for a while. She was still digesting all the information given to her.

“So, am I just someone in a story, too?” she asked with tears building up again.

“Of course you’re not,” said Val as she went over to her. “Well, you are in a story, but you’re a real person and you do live happily ever after,” she added with a giggle trying to get her to smile. “We’ll get through this. You’ll see.”

“Oh my,” said Rapunzel.

“What is it?” asked Sam.

“I can take you to a unicorn. At least I think I can. Sorry, I was so sad, I’m not thinking clearly.”

“You can? How?” asked Lily.

“I’ve seen them at the stream at the edge of the forest. I have even petted them.”

“You’ve petted them?” said Lily with surprise in her voice.
